About Us

Owner, with her brother, Robert. c. 1955

Paula L. Gilman is a direct descendant of Edward Gilman who came to Gilmanton from Exeter, NH in the late 1600’s.  It is documented that Edward Gilman was the first Gilman settler in NH and his son Edward, Jr. was one of the original Gilman families who settled in Gilmanton.  On May 20, 1727 Governor John Wentworth signed a Charter granting the Town to 24 persons by the name of Gilman, in addition to 153 other individuals, as compensation for services rendered in defense of the country.

The tract of land now known as Fernwood Farm has been in Ms. Gilman’s mother’s family, Hawkins, since 1914 and Ms Gilman is the third generation to work this land.  Ms Gilman has a degree in Horticulture and was pursuing a degree in Environmental Science when she was finally able to purchase this tract of land from her extended family.  Ms Gilman forfeited her Environmental Science degree in order to follow her life-long dream of building her home and starting Fernwood Farm on her family’s land. Ms Gilman is a Horticulturist, Consultant, and Certified Organic Producer.  She is a member of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers; New Hampshire Made; Northeast Organic Farmers Association of NH, and the American Tree Farm System.  In addition, Ms Gilman is a Town Representative for Five Rivers Conservation Trust, a member of the Gilmanton Land Trust and a former member of the Gilmanton Conservation Commission.

Bella, my beautiful friend and constant companion.

Fernwood Farm is a small Certified Organic working farm offering flowers, herbs, scenery, and views that are constantly changing with the seasons. Fernwood Farm is a beautifully landscaped property in the heart of the Lakes Region.  Surrounded by 53 lush acres of hayfields, wildflower meadows, ponds, forests, numerous flower gardens, and wooded hillsides, Fernwood Farm provides a distinctively rustic yet elegant country setting which is protected forever by a Conservation Easement on the entire property.  We are close to major roads and services.

Fernwood Farm has over 500 peonies and many varieties of specialty cut flowers which includes edible flowers & herbs. We are dedicated to promoting organic & sustainable agriculture; encouraging selection of native plants in the landscape; land conservation; and environmental education.
