Gilman is a direct descendant of Edward Gilman who came to Gilmanton from Exeter, NH in the late 1600’s. It
is documented that Edward Gilman was the first Gilman settler in NH and his son Edward, Jr. was one of the original
Gilman families who settled in Gilmanton. On May 20, 1727 Governor John Wentworth
signed a Charter granting the Town to 24 persons by the name of Gilman, in addition to 153 other individuals, as compensation
for services rendered in defense of the country.
The
tract of land now known as Fernwood Farm has been in Ms. Gilman’s mother’s family, Hawkins, for 95 years and Ms Gilman is
the third generation to work this land. Ms
Gilman has a degree in Horticulture and was pursuing a degree in Environmental Science when she was finally able to purchase
this tract of land from her extended family. Ms Gilman forfeited her Environmental Science degree in order
to follow her life-long dream of building her home and starting Fernwood Farm on her family’s land. Ms Gilman is a Horticulturist, Consultant, and Certified Organic Producer. She is a member of
the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers; New Hampshire Made; Northeast Organic Farmers Association of NH, and the
American Tree Farm System. Fernwood Farm is a Certified Tree Farm. In addition,
Ms Gilman is a Town Representative for Five Rivers Conservation Trust and a past member of Gilmanton Conservation Commission
and Gilmanton Land Trust.

FERNWOOD FARM Fernwood
Farm is a small Certified Organic working farm offering warm hospitality in addition to flowers, scenery, and views that are
constantly changing with the seasons. Fernwood Farm is a beautifully landscaped property in the heart of the Lakes Region.
Surrounded by 53 lush acres of hayfields, wildflower meadows, ponds, forests, numerous flower gardens, and wooded
hillsides, Fernwood Farm provides a distinctively rustic yet elegant country setting. We are close to major
roads and services. At Fernwood Farm the only bright lights you will be subjected to are the moon and stars. The
only noises come from the birds, crickets, and the sound of the breeze in the trees.
Fernwood Farm has over 100 peonies along with many varieties of specialty cut
flowers in addition to edible flowers & herbs. We are dedicated to promoting organic & sustainable
agriculture; encouraging selection of native plants in the landscape; land conservation; and environmental education.
